Ten young athletes, representing Staten Island and Rab’s Country Lanes, recently traveled to Detroit, Mich., to compete in the 2024 United States Bowling Congress Junior Gold Championships.
This prestigious event saw over 3,100 USBC Youth members from across the country gather with hopes of claiming national titles, earning spots on Junior Team USA, and securing scholarships from a $500,000 fund.
The Island’s talented bowlers showcased their skills across eight different bowling centers in the Detroit area, bowling 16 games each in the qualifying rounds, each vying for their chance to shine on a national stage. Each athlete earned their spot to compete through performances in local qualifying leagues or tournaments during the season.
Leading the borough’s delegation of athletes with an impressive performance was Justin Arenas, who finished in 78th place in the highly competitive Boys’ U15 Division.
Justin’s journey was one of determination. With series of 722, 805, 835, and 827 in the qualifying rounds, he advanced to the first Advancer Round, needing to be in the top 58 to move further. His final 5-game series in the Advancer Round of 926 secured him 78th place finish and a $250 scholarship. Justin has had an incredible season, and this was a testament to his hard work as he looks forward to the 2024-25 season.
Coach Melissa Kammerer was onsite with our athletes, providing guidance and support. Having competed on this stage as a young athlete herself, she has direct insight into the event. Reflecting on their experience, she shared, “With the experience gained at the Junior Gold Championships, our bowlers are more motivated than ever to continue improving and striving for excellence. We look forward to seeing their progress in the upcoming seasons and cheering them on in future competitions.”
