Sean McAuliffe’s 796 was the top score from the opening weekend of qualifying in the 48th New Year Singles Classic at Rab’s.

He was one of eight squad leaders who automatically received a berth in the 24-man finals to be held Jan. 20 at 1:30 p.m., meaning McAuliffe, the runner-up last year to New Jersey’s Steve Soss, guaranteed his 12th berth in the NYSC finals.

John Baranello Jr. (789) and Cameron LaPlant (789) and six-time NYSC winner George Cretella (784) rounded out the top four series of the weekend. All three won their respective squads.

The second and final weekend of qualifying will be held Saturday and Sunday with squad times slated for 1 and 2:30 p.m. each day.

The entry fee is $60. The format consists of bowling three games across six lanes. Handicap is 70 percent of a 220 average. The finals are scratch.

The top two high rollers from each qualifier (16) will be seeded into the finals as well as the next eight high series for a total of 24 finalists.
