NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The college women’s bowling teams of Maya Avilez (North Carolina A&T State University) and Lauren Ruth Sarreal (Wagner), both formerly of New Dorp High School, were recognized by the National Tenpin Coaches Association for excelling in the classroom throughout the academic year.

In all, 397 honorees representing NCAA bowling programs at 52 schools were lauded as student-athletes who must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher for the academic school year to qualify for this award.

Avilez just completed her freshman campaign at North Carolina A&T. She and her team checked in with a 3.60 cumulative index.

Sarreal, a junior-to-be in the fall, was part of the Seahawks’ second-year program, which managed a 3.53 index.

Sarreal’s Wagner teammates were are Kaitlyn Gonsalves, Amanda Medvetz and Totiana Miranda.

“I’m very proud of our team’s efforts on the lanes but more importantly, their commitment to their studies inside the classroom,” commented Wagner head coach Joseph Ambrose. “We made a lot of strides as a program and know that we will continue to build upon the foundation while reaching new milestones and heights on and off the lanes.”
