The Monsignor Farrell alumni team captured the annual New Year’s Eve Battle of the Schools Wednesday at Rab’s Country Lanes.
The winning quintet, consisting of Rob D’Onofrio, Nick Siggia, Dan Dunleavy, Steve McNichol and Scott Porto, toppled Susan Wagner, 457-441, during a two-game Baker format (alternating shots) in the title game of the tourney, which has been become of the most popular events on the bowling calendar.
The Lions were seeded second after 10 games of qualifying, while SW was fourth.
Top-seeded McKee/Staten Island Tech 2 fell to SW, 477-419 in the semifinals, while Farrell beat No. 3 seed St. Peter’s, 457-373, in the other semifinal.
As in the past, this tourney is not just about competition, it’s about giving back. Bowlers not only compete for bragging rights, but their winnings are donated back to their alma maters’ bowling programs.
“In conjunction with the Rab Wilkinson Foundation and the participating bowlers, we were able to award $2,000 to local high school bowling,” said tournament director Michael Ruffe.
The winning squad earned $1,000 for the Farrell bowling program, while Susan Wagner earned $500 for the Falcons’ bowlers.
The SW squad consisted of Tim McAuliffe Jr., Jason Gianna, Joey Weisenstein, Mike Fiore and Dan Costantino.
MSIT 2 and St. Peter’s split $500 to go to their respective high school programs.
