Bowling: New Year Singles Classic finals field set as qualifying comes to a close

Sean McAuliffe’s 796 series rolled in the opening weekend of qualifying went unsurpassed in the second and final weekend of qualifiers over the weekend in the 48th annual New Year Singles Classic held at Rab’s.

The 24-man scratch finals will be rolled Saturday at 1 p.m. at Rab’s in the long-running, successful event guided by Jim Elliott.

Robert Jew (794), Robert Butler (790), Vincent DeSimone (789), John Baranello Jr. (789), Cameron LaPlant (789), George Cretella (784), Mike Vignola (783), Jeff Martin (781) and Peter Gluzmonov (780) round out the top 10 of the star-studded finals field. Cretella is an unprecedented six-time winner of the NYSC.

Longtime kegler and one of the Island’s all-time greats Jeff Scire, who is seeking his initial NYSC title, qualified with a 770 as did defending champion Steve Soss (761) of New Jersey. Soss, a lefty, also won in 2020.
