Common Bowling Mistakes and How to Fix Them

How’s your bowling score? Okay, now how is your bowling score, really? Are you happy with your growth as a bowler, or do you find that no matter how much you try, you just can’t improve? At Rab’s Country Lanes we’ve seen a lot of bowlers in the last twenty years. Check to see if you’re making one of the most common bowling mistakes that we see.

    • Bad Stance. If you’re not starting right, you won’t like where you end up. Your bowling arm should swing freely by your side, straight back and forth without any sideways movement. You should also make sure to point straight at your target on your pushaway.
    • Tossing, Not Rolling. This should go without saying, but: don’t throw the bowling ball! Let go of your ball just as your foot is reaching the foul line, and don’t try for spectacular air time. Your ball shouldn’t land on the lane several feet past the line. For one thing, it’s hard to control–for another, it’s loud.
    • Drifting. If you start your approach lined up with one board, you should end lined up with the same board. Otherwise, everything else will be out of whack. One of your lane mates can help you catch this.
    • Moving Too Fast. It’s not a race! Take a deep breath. Count to five if you have to. Whatever you do, take your time.

Once you know what you’re doing wrong, the best way to improve is to practice. Check out our open bowling times and specials and come down to Rab’s to work on your game!
