It’s down to the wire for the undefeated Staten Island football team, the Staten Island Lions.

“It means a lot. This is my first year playing football on a team. I usually play football for fun but now that I’m playing on a team since it’s my first year, it’s very special,” Anthony Schipani, an athlete, said.  When Schipani joined the Staten Island Lions, he never dreamed he and his teammates would head to the Super Bowl.

Jimmy Durkin, assistant coach and president of the league, is hoping the bowling event raises the money they need.

They held a fundraiser Friday at Rab’s Country Lanes for the upcoming trip.

“The smiles on their face when they finally knew they were going and the announcer saying and Staten Island is going to Florida you can just see the excitement on their faces,” Durkin said.

The team of 13- and 14-year-olds are heading to the Pop Warner Super Bowl in Orlando, which some may say it’s the little league World Series for football.

“We started the league in 2008 for the 2009 season and this is the first team to go to the national championship,” Durkin said.

In order to take the trip, they need to save up. The team started a GoFundMe account, where they raised $21,000 so far and need to reach $35,000.

“We’re fundraising to offset the cost of airfare, hotels and meals,” Durkin said.

The team hopes to raise $600 at the bowling fundraiser. It was $25 for people to take part.

For an extra boost, the bowling alley is donating $10 for every person who bowls.

“Hopefully they’ll raise a lot of money, enjoy some camaraderie today and have a great time,” Nazareth Laursen, Rab’s general manager, said.

Schipani ’s mother, Lori Ann DeJesus-Schipani, said considering the steep costs of the trip this fundraiser could really help parents of the players.

“I mean it’s expensive haha it was a shock I mean it really wasn’t a shock they were undefeated all season these boys are outstanding,” DeJesus-Schipani said.

Schipani and his friends hope to keep the winning streak going to win the Super Bowl.

“Definitely beat all of the national championship beating all those teams. It’s gonna be good,” he said.

“It feels like really good. I’ve never had this experience before,” Austin Busso, an athlete, said.

“We worked all season to do this. It’s just fun winning with all of the teams and the coaches,” Jaden DiLorenzo, an athlete, said.

The team will head to Florida Friday, Dec. 2.

Staten Island Chamber Members Hit the Lanes for Fall Member Meetup

September 22, 2022 by Rab's Country Lanes Leave a Comment

By Danielle Wiseman, the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce

On Tuesday, September 21st, the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce held its fall Member Meetup, “Roll Down to Rab’s,” co-sponsored by Aurora Computer Technology and Rab’s Country Lanes. Approximately 50 Chamber members gathered at Rab’s on Tuesday for an evening of networking, appetizers, and, of course, bowling.

The event kicked off in the charming High Roller’s Lounge, a hidden gem at Rab’s featuring an extensive bar, lounge area, and pool tables. Rab’s also generously provided food and drinks for event attendees.

Linda Baran, President and CEO of the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce, started her remarks by thanking hosts Frank Wilkinson, owner of Rab’s Country Lanes, and Pat Buono, owner of Aurora Computer Technology. She continued by introducing new members Caileen Gonzalez of Tiny to Tall Tutoring, Dr. Ife Akinsheye Damon of The Community-Based Education Movement, and Irina Portnova of Life Palette Coaching.

Frank Scarangello, Chairman of the Board of the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce, provided additional commentary during the new member introductions, asking questions and offering words of support. “Listen, you have to come to these events, mix, and make it fun,” says Scarangello. “The Chamber has a ton of unique, new businesses that a lot of us old folks aren’t quite aware of yet, and that’s why we’re here. There are a bunch of people in this room who have a lot to share with us, and we want them to share. We push them to share!”

Members ended the night with some hearty rounds of bowling, bonding with familiar and unfamiliar faces alike. Thank you again to Rab’s Country Lanes and Aurora Computer Technology, and we hope to see you at the next Member Meetup!

The Gym Bag: Junior Kegler Guarnieri rolls first 300

Joe Joe Guarnieri fires 300 game

Sixteen-year-old Joe Joe Guarnieri fired his first perfect game in the Rab’s Youth Summer Scholarship Triples League last Friday at Rab’s Country Lanes.

The perfecto came in the middle game of a 701 set. He started the night with a 173, and finished with a 228.

If you remember, Guarnieri, who has been bowling since the age of 2, and his mom, Cathy, set up a makeshift lane in front of their Midland Beach home during the pandemic while the alleys were shut down.

“Bowling my first 300 feels great!” said Guarnieri, a two-handed bowler. “I have been working hard to achieve my goal. I’m so glad my mom was there to watch me throw my first 300. It’s a great feeling to bowl the 300 right before Junior Gold Nationals.”

Guarnieri, whose previous high game was a 296 rolled two weeks ago, is averaging 215 in the loop.

The 701 series was well below his career-high 771.

“I want to thank my dad, Nick Bellomo, (Country Lanes proprietor) Frank Wilkinson and Melissa Kammerer, my coach, for all that they’ve done for me,” said the St. Peter’s High Schooler. “Also my grandmother and grandfather, Judy and Anthony (Guarnieri), for coming to all my tournaments.”

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The sun shone brightly for a record-breaking number of community spirited locals, business leaders and friends of Staten Island University Hospital who came out for the health care center’s annual Golf, Tennis and Bocce Classic at the Richmond County Country Club.

The day kicked off with the first bocce ball rolled out at 10:30 a.m., before golfers took to the greens for a shot gun start at noon. Tennis players hit the courts at 1 p.m. for the fun day filled with fine food, drinks, and good company.

“We are very excited to welcome everyone back for our Bocce, Golf and Tennis outing, once again,” said Dr. Brahim Ardolic, executive director of Staten Island University Hospital.

Later in the day participants regrouped at the main clubhouse for the 6 p.m. reception that followed on the sprawling outdoor patio and indoor banquet room.

This year’s honorees were Dr. Christopher E. Graziano, past president of the SIUH Medical and Dental Staff, and Frank Wilkinson, chairman of the Rab Wilkinson Foundation — two dedicated individuals who’ve supported Staten Island through healthcare and philanthropy.

Blood drive held on Staten Island for boy’s birthday after mom’s complications during pregnancy

June 16, 2022 by Rab's Country Lanes Leave a Comment

STATEN ISLAND, New York (WABC) — A blood drive was hosted at a bowling alley on Staten Island Wednesday, in celebration of a young boy’s first birthday after his mother needed blood transfusions following childbirth.

The drive was a welcome sight after the New York Blood Center announced a blood emergency last month due to an alarming drop in blood donations. The region’s blood supply currently stands at a 2-3-day level, which is well below the ideal level of 5-7 days.

So while most people give presents, the McAuliffe family gave blood, as a way to give back to the community and ensure that there are life-saving blood donations available for anyone who may need it, like Stephanie McAuliffe.

The Staten Island mother developed a condition during her pregnancy called placenta accreta and placenta previa, which causes a dramatic increase in bleeding, and can even lead to death.

She needed six units of blood to replace what was lost when giving birth to her son Russell.

“Really just laying in that bed, and I saw my husband in NICU, I said I can’t believe that I’m alive, it was always a fear of mine,” Stephanie McAuliffe said.

But she has now turned that pain into purpose, holding a blood drive where at least 60 donors have signed up. The New York Blood Center says they are grateful.

“I would say that we are probably actually at 50%, but definitely not at 60 or 65%,” said Chantal Mehu of the New York Blood Center.

The blood drive was held at Rab’s Country Lanes and is the second blood drive that they have hosted.

“This is the second blood drive in the last year that we’ve hosted as a result of the pandemic and the shortages, so to be able to open our doors, have a space to do so, that’s why we’re here,” said Frank Wilkinson of Rab’s County Lanes.

As for the condition that Stephanie McAuliffe had, placenta accreta and placenta previa are serious conditions that can cause complications for the baby and mother. It’s become more and more common. In fact, the cases have quadrupled since the 1980’s, due to the increasing number of C-sections.

But Wednesday marked a celebration of both birth and survival, and was a way of gathering donors while larger companies still have fewer people at the office.

Stephanie McAuliffe’s husband said his wife is a guiding light and a positive example at a time when it’s needed the most.

The NYBC encourages all who are able to sign up and donate today.
