Thrillist Pick: Rab’s Country Lanes
A journey by land and sea leads to this 48-lane Traditional Alley. Unlike most other spots, you can reserve lanes in 15-minute increments, perfect for the single bowler looking to squeeze in a few quick games. If it weren’t attached to the alley, Rab’s High Roller Lounge would still be worth a visit in its own right.

Bowling Etiquette 101
Bowling is just like any game–it’s fun, competitive, and it has its own rules and etiquette that can seem a little daunting to newbies. Don’t panic! At Rab’s Country Lanes in Staten Island, we’ve put together a simple guide to bowling etiquette. Check it out, and then check us out!
Who Goes First?
- Sometimes more than one bowler will be on the approach at the same time. In that case, generally speaking, whichever bowler got there first will bowl first. If it’s not clear who got there first, the bowler to the right should go first. Of course, that can change with several factors, so use your best judgment and be respectful of others.
Where Do We Chat?
- Not on the approach! The approach is for bowling, not socializing. Remember, there are people waiting. Keep the conversation to the seats and the snack bar.
Stay In Your Lane.
- Bowling is fun, but that doesn’t mean you should run wild. Running, wrestling, throwing things, and the like are dangerous for you, other bowlers, and the bowling alley itself, and could get you kicked out. Don’t forget to keep your limbs contained in your own lane–nobody wants stray hands or feet distracting them.
Pay Attention.
- Yes, bowling is a social game, but if you’re holding everyone up, your friends and teammates will quickly get frustrated with you. Keep track of what’s going on and don’t miss your turn.
This may seem like a lot, but don’t get distressed! At Rab’s Country Lanes our staff is always ready to help. Contact us or come out for open bowling sessions!

Common Bowling Mistakes and How to Fix Them
How’s your bowling score? Okay, now how is your bowling score, really? Are you happy with your growth as a bowler, or do you find that no matter how much you try, you just can’t improve? At Rab’s Country Lanes we’ve seen a lot of bowlers in the last twenty years. Check to see if you’re making one of the most common bowling mistakes that we see.
-
- Bad Stance. If you’re not starting right, you won’t like where you end up. Your bowling arm should swing freely by your side, straight back and forth without any sideways movement. You should also make sure to point straight at your target on your pushaway.
- Tossing, Not Rolling. This should go without saying, but: don’t throw the bowling ball! Let go of your ball just as your foot is reaching the foul line, and don’t try for spectacular air time. Your ball shouldn’t land on the lane several feet past the line. For one thing, it’s hard to control–for another, it’s loud.
- Drifting. If you start your approach lined up with one board, you should end lined up with the same board. Otherwise, everything else will be out of whack. One of your lane mates can help you catch this.
- Moving Too Fast. It’s not a race! Take a deep breath. Count to five if you have to. Whatever you do, take your time.
Once you know what you’re doing wrong, the best way to improve is to practice. Check out our open bowling times and specials and come down to Rab’s to work on your game!

ownit.nyc Feature: Rab’s Country Lanes, bowlatrabs.nyc | Case Study
If you live in NYC’s Staten Island and you love bowling, these days there aren’t many venues around. While once there were 11 local bowling alleys, today there are only two. One of them is Rab’s Country Lanes. Rab’s is a locally-owned neighborhood bowling alley that was established more than 20 years ago by Rab Wilkinson.
Rab got his start in the bowling business when he landed a job as a pinboy at a NYC bowling alley. Spending his days manually resetting bowling pins, clearing fallen pins, and returning balls to players, Rab dreamed that one day he’d own his own place. In 1995 that dream finally came true.
Rab’s has always been on the cutting-edge. “We were one of the first businesses in Staten Island to have a website—ours goes back to 1997.” Today Rab’s website is a big part of its success. “More than ever, people are heading online to find what they need. Our website ensures they can learn everything they need to know about us.”
